How to easily remove a Power BI On-Premise Data Gateway from a Cluster
In the past when I had to remove a Power BI Data Gateway from a cluster, I had to use PowerShell with a couple steps which was rather complex.
I recently found out that this can now be easily achieved using the Power BI Admin Centre in the steps below.
Viewing the Current Gateway with the Cluster Members
The first thing I did was to view the current Cluster and see the members of the Gateway.
-
I logged into the Power BI Admin Centre and selected my Gateway
-
I then clicked on the Open gateway cluster details
-
I could then see the details of the cluster, as well as the Device (Server Name)
Uninstalling the On-Premise Data Gateway from the Device (Server) PBI-V1
To remove the gateway from the cluster I first had to uninstall the gateway from the server.
-
In my example this was from the device (Server) PBI-V1
- I then uninstalled the On-Premises data gateway.
Removing the On-Premise Data Gateway from the Cluster
This used to be the hard part, which is now a lot easier using the Power Platform Admin Centre.
- I logged into the Power BI Admin Centre and selected my Gateway
-
I then clicked on the Open gateway cluster details.
-
I could then see the details of the cluster, as well as the Device (Server Name)
-
I then clicked on my Gateway called “Power BI 2nd Gateway” and then clicked on Remove.
-
I then got the prompt asking me if I was sure, I clicked on Remove.
- NOTE: After you click Remove it appears like nothing is happening, but there IS!
-
I waited about 5 minutes and clicked on Check status.
-
I could then only see the one Device(Server) in my Cluster
Summary
In the steps I have shown above it has made it a LOT easier to remove an On-Premise Data Gateway from a Cluster of servers. This is great work that has been done by the Power BI Team.
I hope people will find this method a lot easier and quicker to remove gateways in a cluster. If you got any questions or suggestions, please let me know.

Hi Gilbert,
Thanks for sharing. So we have a scenario where our gateway is clustered, the main primary node and then another gateway. We need to remove the main primary node and replace it with another server with the gateway, my question is the initial gateway connections that were established on the main primary node, will they delete once I remove the main primary node from the cluster?
Thanks,
Renu
Hi there,
Firstly make sure you have got the recovery key. Whixh you will need if you want to restore your gateway.
I would then look at use the API or the admin center to make the secondary gateway the primary gateway
You could then swop over the hardware
